Star Trek Retrospective: Original Series Season 1 (Part 1 of 6)

Image result for star trek

In this retrospective, I’ll be going through the various Star Trek TV shows and reviewing them episode by episode.

Rating System:

I will be rating episodes on three criteria:

  • Does it propose new or unique ideas
  • Does it expand on the Star Trek universe or characters
  • Is it a good episode on its own merits?

Impulse: The Worst Star Trek episode in a series. (For example, the worst start trek episode of Deep Space Nine)

Warp Factor 1: An episode that does nothing new, that does nothing to expand the star trek universe and is not very good as a stand-alone episode.

Warp Factor 2: An episode that is poor in either innovation, exploration or quality, but has one redeeming feature.

Warp Factor 3: An episode that is mediocre in most areas but fails in one in particular.

Warp Factor 4: An episode that is generally mediocre, but has one disappointing score.

Warp Factor 5: An episode that is generally mediocre.

Warp Factor 6: An episode that is generally mediocre except for one or two pretty good scores

Warp Factor 7: An episode that has either all pretty good scores or one stand-out score

Warp Factor 8: An episode that scores very highly in more than one area.

Warp Factor 9: The perfect episode that is innovative, expands the lore and is good in it’s own right.

Warp Factor 10: The best start trek episode in a series

Intro to the Cast:

For those unfamiliar with Star Trek, it’s very much a “problem of the week” show, so generally, the most consistent element is the main cast with the situation changing every episode. Here’s an introduction to them.

Captain James T Kirk: Captain of the Enterprise, Kirk is the main character and generally, the one allowed the more screen time. At this point, his characterization isn’t as strong as he’ll become, but generally, he’s a brash and bold ship’s captain.

Science Officer Spock: A Vulcan rather than a human, Spock is from a species of pointed eared humanoid (no they’re not elves, don’t ask again) who are famous and notorious for their restraint of emotions and their use of logic. Generally a voice of reason for the crew.

Image result for star trek spock

Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy: The ships medical officer, McCoy is the surly medical officer who serves as an emotional voice that is counter to Spock’s pure reason. The two often butt heads in the series.

Hikaru Kato Sulu: Sulu is the helmsman. We don’t get a lot of development for him this early, but we do know he likes fencing and plants.

Image result for star trek sulu

Nyota Uhura: Communications officer for the Enterprise. We get a little more development for her at this point than Sulu, as she seems to have a friendly relationship from Spock.

Montgomery “Scotty” Scott: Perhaps the most underdeveloped of the main cast. Scotty is a Scottish engineer.

Star Trek: Episode 2: The Man Trap

Related image

Synopsis: Kirk, McCoy and another crewmember go down to a planet inhabited by a woman who McCoy was once in love with and her Husband. The away team all view her as a different woman, with McCoy saying she looks exactly as she did ten years ago. Then one of the members of the team dies. Now the crew of the enterprise must investigate this strange woman and her mysterious husband.

Review: This episode isn’t particularly interesting or good. It definitely feels like a product of the 1960s in terms of sexual politics and intergender relations. It doesn’t really do much to stand out and mostly just has a weird monster who’s strange seemingly for the sake of strangeness. The only new idea it puts forward is a death by sucking the salt out of someone. All in all, I’d give this one a miss in your Star Trek marathon. The only reason I could think of to watch this episode would be to see Star Trek in it’s most awkward stages or if you like the idea of a shapeshifting monster running around the Enterprise.

Warp Factor 4

First Episode to: Introduce the Redshirts. So many random barely named crewmembers die that this episode, which is going to happen a lot in the original series.

Star Trek: Episode 3: Charlie X

Image result for star trek charlie x

Synopsis: The enterprise takes on a boy who was the sole survivor of a crashed transport ship on the planet Thasus. It turns out this boy has strange and powerful abilities to alter matter.

Review: I honestly hate Charlie. The fact that the episode is an extended amount of time with this whiney entitled git is perhaps the worst stain on an otherwise interesting entry into the early series. The only thing I feel is worse is that by the end we’re supposed to sympathize with him when he’s being taken off the enterprise. It’s like we’re supposed to forget that he’s a dangerous and selfish brat who used his superpowers to make a woman disappear because she wouldn’t be his girlfriend and made another guy disappear for laughing at him.

However, this episode introduces some new concepts and mechanics. Though it doesn’t do much to expand the universe itself other than the introduction of the Thasians who appear and then are never mentioned again. The addition of matter transmuting godlike powers is a future staple of the series, as well as the crew having to fight off said godlike beings. It’s also one of the things that makes the show unique (apart from maybe the twilight zone). Making that godlike being an adolescent is also a neat addition.

Warp Factor 5

First Episode to: Introduce what I’d term Star Trek Gods, because there are so many that it might as well be a pantheon.

Star Trek: Episode 4:  Where No Man Has Gone Before

Image result for star trek where no man has gone before

Synopsis: After the Enterprise investigates a ship which went through a magnetic space storm and was destroyed shortly afterward. After the ship goes through the same storm, a crewmember and an old friend of Kirk gains growing power and a god complex.

Review: As much as it is repetitive to do a god like being as the focus of an episode twice in a row, this feels like a much better version of Charlie X. It deals with the themes of a human becoming a godlike being much more effectively and isn’t tied down by an annoying git. Gary Mitchel is an asshole, but we’re not supposed to feel sympathy for him so it’s okay.

Spock’s background and his status as an emotionless being is mentioned here, and ties in very well to the whole idea of humanities compassion being both a weakness and a strength, as Kirk fails to kill Gary when he has the chance at first but does manage to convince Dr. Dehner to help him in  the climactic battle.

Warp Factor 6

First Episode to: Introduce what I’d term Star Trek Gods because, there are so- Oh wait, that was the last one. I guess this episode was the first to have Spock in a yellow suit for no reason.

Star Trek: Episode 5: The Naked Time

Image result for star trek naked time

Synopsis: The Enterprise is sent to investigate a station on a frozen world that is slowly collapsing in on itself. Meanwhile, a disease takes its toll on the minds of the crew, driving them insane.

Review: This episode contains some great moments of drama and some great moments of comedy. This is both good and bad, good because we get such intensity and bad because it makes the tone somewhat inconsistent. However, this is a somewhat minor nitpick as regardless of how goofy some of the things that happen are, this episode maintains a really good core of suspense and tension throughout as the planet threatens to drag the Enterprise down with it.

My only other main complaint is that it doesn’t really do much to add to the universe of Star Trek. Besides an exploration of Spock’s character and the introduction of the matter replicator for food, we don’t really have much of an addition to the universe of Star Trek.

The innovation of placing a “we’re going insane on a long voyage” in space is pretty noteworthy. The addition of the planet dragging them in with gravity is an especially interesting nod to science.

Guide to the Grammy Awards: This Year’s Best New Artist Nominees

As you may know, the 2019 Grammy Nominees were dropped this week.  This year’s list is packed with unique and talented musicians, but particularly the Best New Artist line-up. 2018 was a long, long, long year but it brought us a BIG wave of new artists and music. While exciting, this may be overwhelming to some if you haven’t been keeping up with music lately.  If  this sounds like you, here’s your quick crash course!

By: Maddie Piper

#1: H.E.R.

This Best New Artist nominee is an American R&B Singer/Songwriter who, in order to keep all attention on the music she creates rather than herself, kept her identity anonymous during the release of her two EPs: H.E.R. volume I and H.E.R. volume II. But after releasing her music, she became so popular that she had no choice but to show herself.   She started out in music as a ten-year-old musical prodigy by the name of Gabrielle Wilson and was signed to a record label at the age of fourteen. She later chose to go by the acronym H.E.R., meaning “Having Everything Revealed.” This crazy talented artist also has 4 other grammy nominations: Album Of The Year, Best R&B Album, Best R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song.

#2: Dua Lipa

Next is Dua Lipa, an English singer songwriter who was discovered through her covers on Youtube when she was 14 years old.  She’s known for her low, smokey voice, and songs like  “IDGAF” and the break-up anthem,”New Rules.” The 22 year old is currently touring her self-titled debut album.

#3 Greta Van Fleet

These guys are a Michigan-based rock band made up of four members from the ages of 19 to 22. Their Zeppelin-esque yet unique and electric sound gives the modern music world not only an awesome throwback vibe, but also a new and refreshing take on the classic rock’n roll genre. The EPs From the Fires and Black Smoke Rising got this group three other Grammy nods; Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Performance.

#4 Margo Price

This country girl made a name for herself this year after the release of her first two albums. Her first,  Midwest Farmer’s Daughter got her dubbed Country Music’s next star in 2016, and her second album, All American Made got lots of attention, including her Grammy nod. Her potent lyrics address social issues in modern America such as the Patriarchy, as well as the institutions set against the working class.

#5 Bebe Rexha

This New York City-based American singer, songwriter, and self-taught record producer is all over the place. Not only does she have her own popular songs including “I’m a Mess”  and “Meant To Be” with Florida Georgia Line, but she also wrote songs for the likes of Eminem, Tinashe, Selena Gomez, Nick Jonas, and Iggy Azalea. Her Studio album, “Expectations” came out June 22, 2018 following her multiple collaborations and EPs.

#6 Jorja Smith

Smith is an English Singer-Songwriter who, since 2016, has released multiple singles including collaborations with Drake and many other artists. She started writing songs at the age of 11, inspired by the political and social issues she experienced growing up in Walsall, West Midlands. She has been compared to the likes of Amy Winehouse, and her strong and poignant lyrics on her album Lost & Found got her to number 3 on the UK charts.

#7 Luke Combs

This American Country singer-songwriter is definitely an unconventional success and is loved for his down to earth attitude and powerful music. In 2015, after releasing two EPs, he dropped his single, “Hurricane” which hit #1 on iTunes. Combs started singing in high school and learned guitar while in college, and has only been making music for about six years.  This unconventional success is taking the music world by storm.

#8 Chloe x Halle

This sister duo from Atlanta Georgia got their start doing covers on Youtube. The two girls were discovered in 2013 after a record label saw their cover of Beyonce’s “Pretty Hurts,” so their soulful voices and sweet harmonies got them a strong fanbase long before the release of their debut album The Kids Are Alright in March of 2018.  They were also recently the opening act for Beyonce and JAY-Z’s On the Run tour, and you can see them act on the TV show Grown-ish.

So there’s the nominees for Best New Artist at the 2019 Grammy Awards! 2018 experienced quite a wave of new artists and music, so we hope this helped you feel a little more caught up, and maybe even got you some new artists to listen to. Who do you hope to see win this year?

Watch YouTube’s top 5 trending videos of 2018

By Sam Edelstein

On December 6th, YouTube revealed the top trending videos of 2018. What qualifies for a trending video? YouTube explains, “We looked at views, likes, shares, searches, parodies, remixes and responses to identify the videos that everybody talked about in 2018.” Let’s take a look at the top 5.

#5: “Do You Hear “Yanny” or “Laurel”? (SOLVED with SCIENCE)” by asapSCIENCE

Who can forget the great Yanny-Laurel debate that took the internet by storm in May 2018. Well, the fellows at asapSCIENCE decided to get to the bottom of the controversy. Why do some people hear Yanny while others hear Laurel? With 50+ million views, the video explains that different factors such as the device used to play the recording and your age play a part in what you hear. Your brain unconsciously chooses which frequency of the yanny-laurel recording to listen to. The video ends by putting the debate to rest. The recording is really saying the word Laurel. I still choose not to believe it. #yanny

#4: “Walmart yodeling kid” by Sonell Official

The video of a tiny blonde boy wearing cowboy boots and bowtie yodeling in a Walmart went viral back in April. The video got shared all over the internet, changing 12 year old Mason Ramsey’s life forever. Since the video was posted, Mason has been signed by a record label and debuted his first single, “Famous”, earlier this year. I will never forget the wonderful memes that came along with this video.

#3: “we broke up” by David Dobrik

Back in June, popular YouTube vlogger David Dobrik announced that he broke up with his girlfriend and YouTuber co-star Liza Koshy. In the emotional video, Dobrik and Koshy explain that they are still close friends, but that they need to work out some things within themselves that’s making it difficult for them to stay together, The news certainly broke the internet and it just goes to show that YouTube stars are becoming more like mainstream celebrities.

#2: “Real Life Trick Shots 2 | Dude Perfect” by Dude Perfect

For the past 9 years, Dude Perfect has been been wowing us with their seemly impossible trick shots. Whether it’s basketball, ping pong, frisbee, or anything else, Dude Perfect continues to impress. With over 137 million views, “Real Life Trick Shots 2” contains trick shot versions of common household chores (i.e. taking out the trash, making a bed). With fantastic editing and incredible skills, Dude Perfect prove why they are #2 on this years list.

#1: “To Our Daughter” by Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner’s ode to her daughter Stormi took the internet by storm and has since ranked up 75+ million views. This video shocked fans when it was released since Kylie had been quiet about her pregnancy. With tons of new footage, the video acted as a birth announcement and also a mini-documentary so that one day Stormi can watch it and see how much her parents love her.

Well that’s the top five! Who knows what 2019 will have in store…

Netflix Martial Arts Marathon: Man of Tai Chi

Recently I discovered something while browsing streaming services: There are a lot of Kung Fu movies online.

I discovered this mostly by looking through Netflix, but I’ve also found a few on the other streaming services I have. There is a decent share of martial arts movies, whether from Asia or the west, on these services. And the variety is huge too, from classic martial arts movies made in China to more recent productions made in America.

While this isn’t exactly an incredible life-changing revelation, it is a personal little bit of serendipity. I watched a few martial arts movies as a kid, but hardly consistently. I have always wanted to get into Martial Arts movies properly and I feel generally as a genre there hasn’t been so much attention on it. So I’ll both be logging my journey into the genre and bringing attention to some quality and not so quality films.

Image result for man of tai chi

So, the Man of Tai Chi.

This is a Keanu Reeves directorial debut, where he works with a stuntman named Tiger Chen who is playing the lead role: Tiger Chen.

That’s one of the weird things about the movie, other than the fact that it’s being directed by the guy who said “whoa” in the Matrix. Tiger Chen is playing Tiger Chen. But it sort of works somehow, but more on that later.

The movie tells the story of Tiger Chen who is the practitioner of a combat oriented branch of Tai Chi. The story follows him as he becomes embroiled in an underground fighting ring, yielding more and more to his dark and impulsive side.

One of the interesting things about this movie is the use of a martial art style which is not typically thought of as dangerous in combat. Tai Chi is typically a martial art which isn’t really seen as Martial, rather a set of calming exercises which improve health and meditate the mind. In the story, this has the effect of leading others to underestimate Tiger as they think Tai Chi is just for show.

The cast of characters and the actors who play them has some weak points, but also some really stand out performances. Tiger Chen is played well by Tiger Chen, which is good as playing someone with your name poorly would be very embarrassing. Generally, he pulls off the physical acting very well, but his line reads are a mixed bag. He feels most genuine when he’s angry or in a fight, but at other times he can feel a bit off. He generally seems much better at delivering his lines in Chinese than in English, which is fair enough as he speaks Chinese throughout most of the movie.

Keanu Reaves plays the Villain, Donaka Mark, and his performance as the antagonist has convinced me fully that he should have been Agent Smith. Keanu’s stone face really complements the role of a cold-hearted CEO who wants to watch two people beat each other to death. The character himself is a bit underdeveloped and bland, but Keanu’s performance brings a sort of joy to watch him on the screen that’s hard to explain. Many of the awkward mannerisms he has helps play up the B movieness of the entire picture in a good way. He does, however, have an annoying habit of repeating lines.

The supporting cast is generally really good. Karen Mok, a regular actor in martial arts related movies, plays the inspector in a side plot involving investigating Donaka Mark and she plays that role well. The archetypal Kung Fu master is played rather well by a Kung Fu movie veteran named Hai Yu. There aren’t really any bad performances from any of them.

Where the movie shines is in its fight choreography and how those fights are shot. There’s a good mix of close up and long shots which help you both see the moves close up and the fight in its totality. Some inventive fights are based on interesting ideas, for example when Tiger goes for a job interview that turns into a brawl, and his opponent uses his smartly dressed tie to throw him around. Each of the individual fight scenes in the movie is unique and well done, each of the notable ones having some sort of twist or feature that distinguishes them.

Tiger Chen’s martial arts style is really fun to watch as it often has these stylistic flourishes and fun details. He often uses his opponent’s force against them or deflects blows with disarming sweeping motions. There are also times when he eschews the more elegant parts of his style for more brutal movements, which coincide with his character development.

Of course, the double-edged sword of this movie is its lack of realism. It can provide some really stylistic fights that look amazing, but many of the details do leave you thinking “really?” Tiger Chen throws people around like they’re ragdolls a little too often for my suspension of disbelief. On the other hand, this realism is sacrificed for a enourmouslly enjoyable spectacle.

The personal journey of Tiger is interesting and engaging. The character himself seems interesting as a soul who the villain plans to cause to fall to the “dark side” of fighting and the scenes where we do see that dark side are interesting. However, his journey is generally pretty predictable. Generally, you have an idea of what’s going to happen to him that is one to three steps ahead of the actual story.

There are several notable weak points. The plot outside of Tiger Chen’s involvement is very, very generic. There is a side plot of a Hong Kong detective investigating Keany Reeve’s character’s underground fighting ring. It’s extremely generic and doesn’t add much to the movie other than giving Tiger a way to stop the ring itself.

The side story follows all the beats of the generic cop story. Karen Mok plays an intense detective who is told by her superior to stay away from the case but feels an overwhelming need to hunt down the bad guy because he killed someone she was responsible for, so she tracks him down in order to get evidence so her boss will let her arrest him. It could only get more generic if she had a gruff older male partner who said “I’m ten days from retirement” and then died tragically. There’s even a twist in the story that you’ll probably be able to figure out way ahead of time because it’s fairly trite.

The second main problem is the villain. Donaka Mark is perhaps the most poorly written villain since Malekith from Thor 2 (You probably don’t remember Malekith or Thor 2 which proves my point). Why does he have an underground fighting ring? The movie’s best answer is “because he likes it.” Why is he a Kung Fu badass? No explanation. Why doesn’t he just kill the detective he knows is investigating him? No real reason. He doesn’t really have much-established motivation for anything other than perhaps that it’s implied he does what he does for shits and giggles.

Another problem is the central teme. The whole conflict of the movie is centered around the idea that for Tiger Chen, killing people is bad. That to kill would be a corruption of his good nature. The problem is that this is treated as a truism. It’s not stated or implied why kicking the crap out of someone is okay but killing someone is bad.

And yes, killing people is generally agreed on to be bad. However, in a movie where the whole point of the story is to explore the emotional conflict between Tiger’s aggression and his control, there isn’t really a good argument made for control. Should he not kill because human life is sacred? Should he not kill because it’s a dishonorable act? Should he not kill because it’s a cruel act to another human being? Is it because of all those reasons? The movie barely even goes so far as to say “it’s bad because it’s bad.” At most it gives the explanation it would corrupt his soul.

For comparison, Batman is a famous superhero who does not kill. His reasons for doing so very subtly from incarnation to incarnation, but generally, Batman does not kill because that is what distinguishes him from the criminals he fights. To kill would make him as bad as the thing he wants to stop.

Tiger Chen fights for money to save his master’s temple or for pleasure throughout the story, so he can’t really claim that to kill would make him as bad as the people he fights, because they fight for basically the same reason.

This wouldn’t be a problem if the movie didn’t take itself so deathly seriously. I can suspend my disbelief for crazy impossible fighting moves, but when you start inserting questions of morality and character and don’t explain rationales or motivations, you open yourself up to criticism.

Despite these problems, overall I think I could recommend the movie. It’s got some good fight scenes and an interesting character journey. It’s pretty unique as the only Keanu Reeves directorial project to date, so if you’re a fan of his I’d say definitely check this out, just don’t go into this movie expecting it to blow your mind.

6 things you may have missed in the Avengers: Endgame trailer

By Sam Edelstein

The long awaited trailer for Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame is finally here. But did you catch these 6 things while watching the trailer? Let’s take a look.

WARNING: This article contains possible spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

#1: How lost is Tony Stark?

The end of Avengers: Infinity War left Tony Stark stranded on the planet Titan. In this screengrab we see Mr. Stark traveling through space all alone. Some fans online have speculated that Tony is so far away that the star system circled in the picture above is actually the Milky Way. This would mean that Tony really is lost in the middle of nowhere. In the trailer, Mr. Stark records a voice message into his Iron Man helmet to his fiancé, Pepper Potts. He says that there is “zero promise of rescue.” This may actually be referring to the comic book character Rescue, who really is Pepper Potts. Will Pepper be the one who rescues Tony? We’ll have to wait until April to find out.

Can the Milky Way be seen in the Endgame trailer?
Pepper Potts as Rescue

#2: Shuri’s Fate

The end of Avengers: Infinity War left audiences stunned to find many of their favorite characters vanish into thin air. One of these characters, Shuri, the princess of Wakanda, was not shown to have died on screen in Infinity War. But the Endgame trailer seems to imply she may have been snapped. In this screengrab we see Bruce Banner looking at a screen of missing people and one person who comes up is Shuri. Now this doesn’t mean she is dead, she’s just missing. On top of that Marvel is known to change the content of their trailers so they’re different than the actual movies, so maybe Marvel edited this scene just for the trailer and Shuri is actually doing just fine.

#3: Thano’s Armor

This image is straight from the Infinity Gauntlet comics which Avengers: Infinity War is based off of. After Thanos snaps his finger, he retires and becomes a farmer. He puts up his armor for good and uses it as a scarecrow. In the comics, the scarecrow plays an important role as the only company Thanos has. It may play a similar role in Endgame. Note that the Infinity Gauntlet is not placed on the scarecrow. Thanos has kept it on his hand, either because it is physically bonded to it or he just can’t separate himself from it.

#4: Ronin

After he was noticeably missing from Infinity War, Hawkeye is back in the Endgame trailer. But this time he’s taking on a different persona- Ronin. The trailer shows Black Widow finding Hawkeye in some foreign country, wearing his Ronin outfit and carrying a katana. In one comic series, Hawkeye becomes Ronin after his family is murdered. We may be able to assume that the Thanos snap killed some -or all- of Hawkeye’s family, causing him to take on this new, dark, persona.

#5: The Return of Ant-Man

Scott Lang was absent in Avengers: Infinity War and was last seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp traveling into Quantum Realm. Viewers of the Endgame trailer were pleasantly surprised to see Scott Lang reappear at the Avenger’s headquarters. This means Ant-Man somehow found his way out of the Quantum Realm and is ready to join the fight and undo the damage that Thanos caused. The Quantum Realm may be the key to doing it.

#6: Peggy Carter

One moment that may have seemed out of place in the new trailer was when Captain America looks at a picture of his long time lover Peggy Carter. There have been rumors going around that the Avengers will need to go back in time to prevent what Thanos has caused. For Cap, this may mean going back to the early 1900’s and finding Peggy. Once again, we’ll have to wait until April to find out if this is true.

Marvel fans are very excited for Avengers: Endgame. Let us know if you catched anything else in this first trailer to one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2019.

The Oscars Controversy

It was recently announced (December 7) that Kevin Hart has stepped down from hosting the Oscars due to past homophobic tweets. Between 2009 and 2011 Hart had taken to twitter to use derogatory language and make insulting tweets about sexuality. One tweet that has been brought back to the public’s attention is from 2011, where he stated he would break his daughters doll house over his son’s head if he tried to play with it. Since Hart has been announced as host of the Oscars he has went onto twitter and started deleting old homophobic tweets. After Hart took to Twitter resigning from the role of host he was still slammed with backlash in the comments including the head of an LGBT civil advocacy group.

Nothing Breaks Like a Heart

Miley Cyrus spoke about the meaning behind her song with Mark Ronson ‘Nothing Breaks Like a Heart’. Lyrics in the song speak of “burning houses with nothing left”. There is some irony behind these words. Miley’s shared home with Liam Hemsworth in Malibu was burned down in the recent California wildfires. She claims it was a coincidence she wrote these lyrics months before the fire took her home. It is a popular belief that because the lyrics speak of heartbreak, the singer may be hinting towards a ‘political heartbreak’ because her relationship with actor Liam Hemsworth is better than ever.
